First Listen: Natural Fathers EP

From the ashes of Brava Spectre comes Natural Fathers, a post-hardcore-meets-blues two-piece consisting of Josh Houser and Kevin Hodge.  The duo will release their self-titled debut EP this Thursday, with a celebration to take place here at the Oasis.

Opening for them will be Wham City's own Nuclear Power Pants.  These guys played a few years ago with The Total Bolsheviks and were really REALLY fun!  They wear these 80s style shark heads and play really fun rock'n'roll.  They're one of those bands you have to see to believe!

Right now, take a listen to the new Natural Fathers EP below and make sure you come by for an extremely awesome show this Thursday!

Cory Branan returns to Oasis!

Cory Branan
Saturday Sept 25
The Oasis Pub
9:30pm, $5, 21+

Cory Branan was first seen in New London performing with his buddies Quiet Life some time ago. Immediately, he struck the crowd as one of the most interesting performers the Oasis has seen to date! You DO NOT want to miss this guy! He only comes once a year or so from his hometown of Memphis, TN!

"There's a new breed of singer-songwriter - Ryan Adams, Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst and now Cory Branan."- Rolling Stone

"Intense dynamics, deep humor, brave production and heavy songwriting: A new voice emerges to run with the greats." - Playboy on "12 Songs"

"4 Out of 5 Stars." - Blender on "12 Songs"

"Cory Branan is featured in Rolling Stone's current 'Hot Issue,' but don't hold that against him...songwriting prodigy gives John Prine a run for the money." - Billboard

"Branan avoids anachronism and shoots straight for timelessness...his sharp, simple lyrics recall the economical, almost scriptural poetry practiced by John Prine or, before him, Bob Dylan."- Nashville Rage

Remind/Rewind: Cabin Fever Winter Ball Official Pics Revealed!

So it's been a month since the incredible Oasis Winter Ball, sponsored by Cabin Fever Maple Whiskey, but the pictures still keep flowing in.  Many of the official Winter Ball pictures have finally been released... there's just SO many, it takes a bit to sift through them.  What a ridiculous night, but one question remains: Will Spring Fling be remotely as good?

Rumor has it that there may be a very sweet beer company getting involved in the sponsorship of the Spring Fling.  We will let you know as soon as we find out, so keep your ears peeled!

And a HUGE thanks to Julie and the Cabin Fever crew, the Whiskey Girls, DJ Rob Vaughn Guess and all of you who made it out for this amazing event!  Can't wait for the Spring Fling!

Remind/Rewind: Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt!

There probably is no better way to kick off 2010!  Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt and The Blastoids (who I discovered got their name from, yes... Pokemon) rocked the hell out of the Oasis last night!  If you missed it, or just want to reminisce about dancing in the streets singing "You make my heart explode!" and cops showing up to break it up, we've got pics and video of the insanity right here!

If you happen to have pics or video that you think should be up here, let us know and we'll post your links!

And thank you to everyone that came out and showed the Terror Pigeon crew love.  They all have said over and over that New London is officially their favorite stop of the tour!

Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt returns to Oasis!

Does this mean another dance party in the middle of Bank Street?

When Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt was announced to play the Oasis on a Monday night in October, everyone said "Who the fuck is Terror People Pigeon Party?!"  Well, after a bonafide shitshow of a Monday night, a lot of people now know who Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt is and will have their second chance to catch this incredible interactive band on Saturday January 2nd, here at the Oasis!

If you are still outta the loop, read this description that the band themselves wrote up...

I think the hardest aspect of the running this band is just trying to describe it to people. Basically we show up with a billion lights, bags and bags of costumes (enough for anyone who wants one), 60 or more light sabers and really good songs, grab some mics and say “look, this is your time; you chose to be here, you probably paid your hard earned money to be here: don’t you dare walk out that door without having the best night of your life! All these things are at your disposal, we’ll help! We’re going to throw an awesome dance party, run around and scream about how fucking cool it is to finally kiss that person you’ve been crushing on for months, how there is nothing better than partying until 5 in the morning when you have to be up for work at 7 and how your friends are so fucking great, and there’s no doubt that you’d be absolutely fucking dead if they weren’t in your life to clean you off when you get shit on. Tonight there is no such thing as uncool. If you really want to hug a wall that’s fine! But if you’ve got a dance in your feet and a song in your heart then you fucking go for it!”

And the best part is that it works. It happens. People come out of their shells and go nuts! We’ve had shows where we just hand the mics over to people in the crowd mid song cause the harmonies they’re singing are so beautiful. People bust out insane moves! People put together the most incredible outfits! And you have no idea how good sword fighters people are! At the end of it people always come up to me and ask me what the name of our band is and who’s in it, and every time I say “We’re the terror pigeon dance revolt! And every single person in this room is in it!”

Needless to say, these guys are a blast! And they're even signed to Luaka Bop, the label headed by Talking Head David Byrne!  Last time these guys came thru, many people said it was their favorite show ever! Why wouldn't you want to start your New Year off like this?!

New London featured in Headlights' latest video blog!

This past October, the widely-renowned Headlights stopped into New London for a show with their tourmates and friends, The Shaky Hands and Pomegranates.  What a show that was!  And the afterparty at Sean's house was just as fun - so much so, that Headlights recorded the whole thing and they brought the memories to their fans.

Right now, you can go view the movie below or at headlightsmusic.com.

BIG SHOW! Headlights | The Shaky Hands | Pomegranates | Mercutio

This Tuesday is gonna be crazy! Three very hyped bands are coming to the Oasis to show us that they're not just a bunch of hype! We're gonna give you some previews of what you can expect from this enormous show...

Headlights

Illinois indie rock band Headlights continue to please with dreamy-pop tunes on their latest album, Wildlife, via Polyvinyl Records.
Their third record, despite the usual handful of upbeat and catchy melodies, also shows the band’s ability to slow down elegantly without sacrificing the natural momentum or lively appeal of their music as a whole.

Many tracks shimmer contagiously with fun synthy spots and smoothly rolling drumbeats, much like their previous album, Some Racing, Some Stopping. They’ve mastered the art of crafting peppy gems, like Wildlife’s opener “Telephones,” a track that builds up its punch and becomes a full-fledged head-bobber by the chorus, or midway through the record on “Get Going,” where crunching guitar work intermingles with a warm and hazy danceable backdrop. Headlights rock a lot like Mates of State, French Kicks or the Pomegranates, offering not only consistently good music, but an overall fun experience.

Check out the video for "Cherry Tulips" below:

The Shaky Hands

Following a tour with The Meat Puppets, Delffs packed his bags and went to live in India for a month and a half, leaving behind his guitar and embarking on a fast from Western music. He sang in the temples and wrote lyrics for the new album, which the band had already started writing, but took the longest break he’d ever taken from playing in a band. This journey, which culminated with a 23-hour plane ride leading directly into a 37-hour drive to Austin for SXSW, altered the direction of the new record—although perhaps not in the most obvious way.

Delffs launched back into the rock scene immediately, playing SXSW and touring back up to Portland. The band spent nearly two months on the road with The Thermals in spring of 2009, where they wrote and developed songs, allowing the new tracks to attain lives of their own each night. After the tour, at Morris’ recommendation, the band went into Jackpot! Studios with producer Jay Pellicci (Deerhoof, Erase Errata). There they spent ten days recording the songs they’d written and practiced, mostly in one or two takes.

Check out the video for "Already Gone," which just debuted on IFC, below:

Pomegranates

Everybody, Come Outside! is the shimmering and dreamy new album from Cincinnati art-pop denizens, Pomegranates. This Cincinnati quartet broke on the scene last year with their debut full length, Everything Is Alive--an album that garnered immediate attention and support from music lovers and taste-makers alike. KEXP and WOXY, among others, fell for the band's quirky and charming blend of pop rock, and listeners followed suit, blogging the band up to 11 on Elbo.ws blog aggregate. The band also caught the attention of their peers. Artists such as French Kicks and Islands responded to Pomegranates' dynamic live set by inviting them out on the road. Everybody, Come Outside! shows a marked improvement both creatively and sonically from its predecessor, channeling influences that range from Talking Heads and Brian Eno, to French Kicks and Fela Kuti. The album was recorded by Pomegranates and mixed and mastered by TJ Lipple of Aloha (MGMT, Headlights, Minus Story).

Check out a live rendition of "Coriander" below:

Mercutio

Mercutio is a musical group out of New London, CT, though 3/4s of the band is from Worcester, MA. Stylistically, the group leans towards spiky, dancey post-punk which may or may not entice you to rock out. Going through a big line up change after recording their first EP, Mercutio has slimmed down to a 4 piece band. The band is currently writing new songs, booking shows, and preparing to take New England by storm.

*** The show begins at 9pm this Tuesday October 20th. $7 cover. 21+ show. Lots of drink specials to be had! Don't miss it! ***

I AM Festival is this Saturday!

http://www.todayfm.com/Libraries/Gallery%20Two/the%20drums.sflbYes, as many of you know, I AM Festival, Connecticut's largest indie music festival, takes place this Saturday, September 12th at Waterfront Park in New London CT. We are extremely excited about this event, especially cause some of today's hottest bands will be playing the fest.

The incomparable Deerhoof headline this year's fest, along with uber-buzzing The Drums, Das Racist and Free Energy. Old friends Tim Easton, Pretty & Nice and Cassavettes will join the lineup as well. Local acts will include Total Bolsheviks, The Weird Beards, Get Haunted, Chasing Trinity and Above/Below. New Haven's The Vultures and M.T. Bearington will round out the lineup as well. This lineup is the festival's best to date.

National press will be covering this event, hence, we are putting our best foot forward for the afterparties this year. The Oasis afterparty will host performances by Fatal Film and The Hempsteadys, who nearly tore the walls down at the Sailfest afterparty. At MUSE Gallery, Justin of The Swagger Jackers will join Chum the Skrilla Guerilla for an awesome dance party. Maybe some special surprise performances are in order?

You do NOT want to miss this amazing day!

New Beer Alert: Magic Hat Wacko | Mokah Imperial Stout | Kona Wailua Wheat

If you've ever stepped foot in the Oasis, you'll know that we love our beers - we have 20 on tap, many microbrews! Well, summer's here and that means lots of new sweet summer beers to try out! Below are some of our exceptional new beers that we think you will absolutely love!

Magic Hat Wacko

Brewed w/ beet sugar, pale malts, Columbus hops, fermented with an English Ale strain.

Yes, you read correctly... beet sugar! Hence, why the beer comes out pink! A great conversation starter at the bar. This has a very pale ale taste to it - not that fruity at all.

Southern Tier Mokah Imperial Stout

A stout brewed with coffee and chocolate!

The folks at Southern Tier couldn’t resist the temptation to combine two of their highly acclaimed Blackwater Series Imperial Stouts: Jahva and Choklat. Alone each is perfect, but together as Mokah they are an inimitable expression of two of the world’s most sought after flavors. A perfect treat for dessert!

Kona Wailua Wheat

It's being referred to here at the Oasis as "the grapefruit beer" if that gives you any hint!

This golden, sun colored ale has a bright, citrusy flavor that comes from the tropical passion fruit we brew into each batch. Sit back, relax and enjoy paradise anytime.
